A rise in the standard of living in a country often only seems to benefit cities rather than rural areas.
What problems can this cause?
How might these problems be reduced?
The gap between urban cities and countryside has become a critical issue, leading to the increase of economic and social inequality, which can have adverse impacts on our long-term development. In this essay, I will illustrate the underlying reasons and offer some viable solutions on it.
Rural-urban disparities is one of the most primary reasons. Specifically, urban areas are often equipped with advanced infrastructure and facilities, including gyms, pubs and department stores. These allow citizens to relax and unwind after a long working hours. For instance, London is the largest capital city worldwide, which is also one of the most prominent financial and political places. With rising living standard, people can benefit from healthcare, education, and transportation. One possible approach is that governments should prioritize the investment in rural infrastructure, including roads, schools and technology, to improve the overall quality of life in these areas.
Another major contributing factor is job opportunities. Cities provides more higher-paid jobs, which attract tens of thousands of youngsters from rural areas. Moreover, there are lots of prestigious universities and advanced manufacturing or companies in cities. The problem can be alleviated by subsidizing funds to these academic institutions and well-known cooperation to invest in rural areas. Take TSMC for an example, one of the most state-of-the-art semiconductor companies in the world. Many countries had invited the company to invest in their rural areas since TSMC need a lot of areas for factories and human resources with high techniques, which can definitely empower the local population and encourage its prospect.
In conclusion, it is inevitable that a rise in the standard of living, it is likely to benefit cities rather than rural areas due to rural-urban disparities and job opportunities. However, with correct and appropriate measures, it is possible to mitigate the impact of the issue.
