To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Nowadays, liberty and freedom are fundamental and paramount values that we cherish. While some people contend that personal freedom should remain inviolable from government interference. However, I firmly disagree with this viewpoint and I will illustrate with two compelling instances in the essay.

First and foremost, public welfare sometimes takes precedence over individual rights. In term of crisis, the government might have no choice but to infringe on one’s privacy or liberty. Take coronavirus as an example, severe pandemic has ravaged for the past three years, majority of individuals worldwide have tested positive for Covid-19. The authorities took measures to mitigate the impacts of the virus, including implementing mandatory mask-wearing regulations, enforcing limitations at national borders; however, contact tracing raised concerns as it intruded upon individuals’ privacy. Individuals testing positive had to undergo quarantine or isolation from others due to public hygiene factor. Moreover, spreading false or misleading information should be curtailed because it may have adverse impact on those who can not easily tell apart true or false.

In addition, social safety is important. Some individuals may not take law enforcements or other’s freedom seriously, which can be a potential menace for jeopardizing other’s life. Firstly, the information of violent or sexual assault criminals or murderers should be revealed to public after confirming the criminal facts by authorities. Also, they should be sentenced to life imprisonment for serious offenses. Second, those who have drunk-driving should be revoked their licenses, which can improve the road safety.

In conclusion, governments have the right to invade one’s freedom when in an emergency or to reduce the crime rates. For these reasons, it is possible that to achieve a healthier, safer and peaceful community.
